Residents at St. Martin’s Home believe in giving back to the community!
In March, 2017, an idea was proposed to the Activity Department of St. Martin’s Home: providing peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the Men’s Shelter located on the grounds of Spring Grove Hospital and St. Vincent de Paul for those in need. Arrangements were made with Schmidt Baking Company in Hanover, Maryland who offered to supply the Resident volunteers with bread, while Ed Cogswell from Patapsco Council Knights of Columbus in Catonsville offered to supply the peanut butter and jam. Cynthia Carpenter supplies the zip-lock sandwich bags and arranges the volunteers to pick up the bread and deliver it to the Home every other week. .
8-10 Residents volunteer each week to make the sandwiches. Regulars each week are Joe Thomas, Peg Bocklage, Jeanne Charland and Francis Snyder. In assembly-line style (with a smile), the Residents and volunteers make over 180 sandwiches twice a month! .
The program has evolved since 2017! Four community volunteers now come on a regular basis also to help the Activities Department offer this community project – a project which encourages our Residents to give back to others!
