WELCOME BOSTON UNIVERSITY STUDENTS!

  • March 19, 2013

Written by Morgan Whaley, Boston University, Alternative Spring Break, 2013

Exhausted from a near-eight hour bus ride, I’m sure the first thing that was on all of our minds was sleep. Fourteen students and one chaperone from Boston University embarked on a bus ride to Baltimore on Saturday night to volunteer with Little Sisters of the Poor for a week through our Alternative Spring Break program. Tired though we were, we were welcomed into St. Martin’s home with open arms. Immediately, the gracious sisters got us settled and fed us a delicious breakfast, along with some much-needed coffee. Before we knew it, we were off to walk in the Baltimore St. Patrick Parade, where the Little Sisters of the Poor were chosen to be honorary grand marshals. For almost everyone in the group, it was our first glimpse or Charm City. We walked through the parade route with the Little Sisters and other volunteers and residents, decked out in our St. Patty’s day best. It was truly an amazing welcome to the city and our stay here, and it was inspiring to see how excited people in the crowd were to see the Little Sisters. So many people yelled out their thanks and appreciation for all that St. Martin’s home provides. The parade gave us great insight not only to the city of Baltimore, but also to the community here at St. Martin’s.
