The Knights of Columbus Ladies of Council 11372 at St. Francis de Sales Church in Abingdon, MD recently hosted an “Ice Cream Social” at St. Martin’s. Council members assisted the Residents with lunch by preparing their plates and serving the meals and drinks. After lunch, the ladies served ice cream with all the toppings – a treat on a hot summer day!
The Council met the Little Sisters at a church collection. Cynthia Santiago, Secretary, said they wanted to volunteer outside their immediate parish and serve the community and elderly. They decided St. Martin’s would be a perfect fit. Cynthia said, “The Residents were very welcoming and appreciative of the ice cream as well as the time we spent talking with them. One of the gentlemen was a Knight and very eager to talk about his past with the K of C. Another Resident was the mother of two fourth degree Knights…what a small world we live in!” One Council volunteer said having conversations with the Residents sparked memories of her own parents and loved ones.
The Council was touched by the humility and charisma of the Little Sisters. Cynthia mentioned, “In the time we spent together, we could see how special the Little Sisters are to do the work they do. St. Martin’s is beautiful and welcoming. It warmed my heart to see how the Residents are taken care of – they are all one, big family.”
We appreciate groups such as the Knights of Columbus Ladies Council who support the Residents. Special social opportunities with outside groups mean so much to the Residents!
