Imagine being 84 years old and relearning the art of playing the piano! Mary Fortier, one of our Residents at St. Martin’s Home, had not played for decades. She began polishing her piano skills about three years ago with the assistance of Elaine Fabian Shelly, pianist and instructor. Mary practices almost every day and said, “Playing the piano gives me something to look forward to, and it relaxes me!” Mary played “I’ll Be Home For Christmas” to a packed auditorium on Sunday, December 2, 2012. Performing with Mary were 20 of Elaine’s piano students.
St. Martin’s Home Residents, friends and family enjoyed listening to the students share their musical skills while performing Christmas carols. In addition to the piano, the students, who ranged in age from 5 to 18, also played the flute and violin. The students and their parents graciously brought small gifts for the Residents. Elaine stated, “The Sisters are so welcoming to our group. The home is so nice and can accommodate our numbers comfortably. This is the fourth year St. Martin’s Home has hosted my students.” The group is making arrangements to return in the spring to present “Music from the Movies.”
